Basketball is a team
sport. There are two teams playing at
all times and there are five people from each team that are playing for the
teams. Basketball is played on an even
surface generally called the “court”.
Both teams play with a basketball which is a circular shaped sphere made
of leather and air is pumped inside it to give the object the ability to
bounce. The ball weighs 20-22 ounces and
has a 29.5-30 inch circumference. The
game also uses a rim and backboard. The
rim is circle that allows the basketball to go through and is bigger than the
ball. The rim has an eighteen inch
diameter and is ten feet above the ground.
The backboard is an assistant to help the basketball get through the
rim. The backboard is rectangular shape
and four feet in length and 3 feet in width.
The main objective of the game is out score your opponent before the
time runs out. There are two sides: Offense and Defense. The offensive player’s objective is to find
the most efficient or any way to put the basketball through the rim. The offensive team may run a set play to give
them the edge over the defense that will allow them to score easy. The offensive player with the ball generally
has three major options: pass, shoot, dribble (not necessarily in that order). The defensive player’s objective is to stop the
offense from scoring. This team may
different formations that may hinder the offense. To stop the offensive team from scoring the defensive
team can steal the ball, block a shot the offensive player puts it, and rebound
the ball after a missed shot.
